MEET THE ARTIST

Deseré Mayo is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, author, and founder of Design by Mayo, creating artwork that honors history, faith, culture, and the creative spirit. Working across graphite, wood, mixed media, and transformed musical instruments, her work explores the belief that creativity is both a gift and a responsibility. Her signature Instrument Transformations series reimagines retired instruments as one-of-a-kind sculptural artworks through hand engraving, painting, wood burning, and symbolic storytelling. Each piece becomes a visual narrative where music, scripture, history, and craftsmanship intersect. Beyond the studio, Deseré develops educational experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity, and cultural understanding. Through programs such as Listen. Learn. Create., she guides students in translating music into visual art while exploring history, artistic expression, and the process of writing about their own creative work. She is also the author and illustrator of the Black Excellence Means book series and the creator of numerous community collaborations, wearable art projects, portraits, and historical illustrations designed to educate, inspire, and preserve stories that deserve to be remembered. At the heart of every project is a simple belief: "My Creator created me to create." Through Design by Mayo, her mission is to create artwork that honors who we are, celebrates the people who shape our communities, and encourages others to discover the creativity placed within them.
